I just got my saddlebag brackets in today, and they're much, much beefier than I expected. They also weigh a TON. I'm not planning to get the OEM saddlebags ever, but I do plan to mount my own saddlebags on these. Has anyone ever done this? I'd like some inspiration before I go out and buy some materials and some hard bags to mount.

Just my mounts that I got from Germany, and when I contacted Viking Saddlebag Company, they told me that they have no Saddlebags that can fit since they have an angle (I know there must be some work around)

Where did you order the mounts from?
and are they direct fitment? or they needed some adjustments?

I don't like the way the OEM saddlbags look either and fortunately I just so happen to be a leather-worker! I'm currently drafting up a few ideas for soft bags while I contemplate how to use the mounts I got (the brackets from the Bolt). If you, or anyone else for that matter, is interested in some custom leather bags I'd be happy to work with you. I can do any size, color, dimension, and customization you'd want. The only thing I would need is a close-up photo of your bracket setup.

That being said, and if you still end up going with hard bags I'd be interested in seeing your setup. For some reason I just cant imagine plastic buckets on a 1970's-styled bike.

I'm ordering the Medium sized Tusk aluminum panniers, and plan to drill and bolt them to the OEM saddlebag brackets. Going for an Adventure look, I think.

I ordered a set of the Fehling luggage racks and supports. One thing that really turned me off from the Yamaha support is it doesn't look like you could really use it with anything but their set up.
You can use it with any bag you can bolt to something solid. So, any universal hard saddlebag, any bolt-on leather saddlebags. Any leather saddlebags that have a removable yoke - you'd need to add a stiffener on the inside. (cheap plastic cutting boards work well). The Fehling guards are good for throw-over bags. The OEM mounts may only bolt at two points, but they're EXTREMELY heavy duty. They're quarter inch plate, with a bend along the top to become essentially quarter inch angle iron. Each bracket weighs in at just under 5 pounds. There's no bending, no flexing at all when they're mounted.

Finally got the bags in and mounted them. The left side bag needed 1” stand offs to clear the shocks.
