MCN Festival of Motorcycling

We took a family trip to the MCN Festival of Motorcycling yesterday - first time the little man has been to such an event, and he loved it!

Although we went in the car, I threw my riding gear in the back, and managed to grab a test ride on a CCM Maverick…..

For those not in the know, CCM are a small British company, started in the 70s, primarily with off road bikes, but who now make funky looking customs like this. It’s a 600 single (Husqvarna/BMW unit), about 60-odd bhp, and 135kg. Boy, it shifts!! And the sound it makes….… I’ve got some thinking to do……. What great half-hour ride it was, though……

Also had a sit on the new Enfield Scram 411. Very comfortable, nice looking bike, but 20-odd bhp…..no thanks.

Whilst Jack enjoyed sitting on the Enfield, he tells me he much preferred the £25k CCM Special Edition ‘Heritage 71’ (made with super-light titanium, and down to about 115kg!!!!!)

Well, he would, wouldn’t he…..(I’m stood behind, laughing……)

"I’ve got some thinking to do…"

So you are considering a second bike?
:cautious:

Like we’ve discussed before - I can’t really afford, nor have the space for, two bikes……

Ben
Looking pretty good in sunshine there ben and co .
I'll give the ccm a miss though a bike must never be lighter then its rider.

Ben
Then take Stu’s advice and steer clear. I’ve never heard that one before Stu. And besides Ben, I’m sure you saw the fine print when you became SuperMod…….

Thou shall not relinquish ownership of said SCR.

How heavy do you think I am…..??! :ROFLMAO:

Ha - I wouldn’t worry just yet. And also, as we’ve seen, my SCR has seen off plenty of other wannabes before.

Valve clearance check coming up, as well as throttle body balancing (using Eddie’s guide from long ago - just bought myself a carb balancer), ready for Scotland next month (y)

I guess the MCN event took over from the old BMF Rally which was held at the Peterborough Showground. Nice to see it's still going albeit under different organisation. My wife had a CCM, a GP450, which was around 125kg, and a bit like riding a big mountain bike, so nimble. But she didn't get on with it after a 4 cylinder Honda Hornet. Wish we'd kept it for me, though - it would have been ideal for green laning.

Anyone in the U.K. going to this, this weekend?

Last one at Peterborough, apparently, before the arena is flattened and a new housing estate is built on it. Pretty depressing thought…..

:ROFLMAO:Sorry , didn't twig where it was fast enough so did normal bimble Saturday, as Sunday is going to be like my armpit, hot & wet!:ROFLMAO:
So……finally got to try out the new sprocket last weekend @[email protected] , when I went to the Festival. It was a 200-odd mile day, so a good test (especially as much of it was motorway).

What did I think? Well…..I quite like it! It’s quite strange, as it seems to make all the gears almost appear a little more “elastic” - quite hard to explain, but it seems to give each gear a little flexibility that wasnt there before, and it’s not as simple as just saying the gearing has been raised a little. I feel like it’s changed the bikes character a bit.

It’s definitely more relaxed in each gear, and I’ve not (yet) really noticed any drop off in acceleration, although there must be some (however incremental).

In 30mph areas, it definitely feels just that bit more relaxed in third, which is what I was hoping for, and again in 4th, on 40mph roads, so pretty happy with that!

From memory, on my Koso, it’s now running at about 3600rpms at 80mph, whereas before I’m sure it was at 4000 (I’d need to recheck this though, as it was a week ago now, and I don’t remember numbers so well :ROFLMAO: )

I tell you one thing I really noticed, which I didn’t expect - engine braking appears quite considerably reduced - which again sort of makes sense, if you think about it?

I certainly don’t intend to go back to the original sprocket, but will report back more, when I get back out on it.

As for the show itself, a good day was had by all, with plenty to look at:

A heavily-modified current Royal Enfield Interceptor flying around the flat track, and taking no prisoners:

Sounded awesome, but so did a modified flat track XS650.

Plenty of old Yams for @Schu to drool over:

And…..the biggest shock of all - another SCR in the car park!!!!!

The first one I’ve ever encountered randomly in the wild! Unfortunately, didn’t get chance to catch the owner……do you lurk on here, I wonder…..??

Got home, and played football with my boy on the driveway, and what did I notice?

Wheel Tire Automotive lighting Automotive tire Vehicle

At some point during the day, my reg (license) plate was deposited somewhere on the Queens Highway!!

The mount had completely sheered/snapped!!

Now - was this always going to happen, or the result of the new sprocket? Was I riding faster than normal (as the bike seemed just a little more capable), and that was the cause? Or, was the bike sitting at slightly different revs to normal for some period of time causing slightly different resonances??

Who knows - I did hit a thwacking great pothole at one point, so maybe the rear shocks simply contracted enough to smack it…..🤷‍♂️

There’s always something……

I'm glad you like the new pulley, Ben. I just had mine out for a quick run to the dealer to get a trade in value. They offered me $5,000 USD and I keep most of the accessories. I'm looking at possibly putting ALL my eggs in one basket with the purchase of either a 2022 or 2023 BMW R1250GS Rally or ADV. They made the same offer for my 2018 FJR1300ES for $11,000 USD. I dunno if I would be happy with just one bike, after I just got both bikes dialed in. Sorry for the rant ( hijack), but what I was getting to was this, I sure enjoyed my ride home with the longer legs! Nice pictures, looks like a great time! Jevers

Oh, and BTW, my license plate bracket snapped off about a year ago. I was shocked to see absolutely no damage to either the bike or the plate after seeing that it was only hanging on by the wires!

Oh man - not another one jumping ship?! 🤦‍♂️

You didn’t notice any effect on engine braking with the 31t pulley, then?

Re. your potential new purchase, you were serious about getting another BM, then…..?

Surely, if you were keeping one of your current bikes, it would be the SCR - wouldn’t the Beemer and FJR be pretty similar in what you used them for (ie touring?)

I’ve got to admit - went out on the R Nine T again yesterday, and it is an absolutely storming bike! And what an engine (and that’s an older generation to what you’d be getting) - pulls like a tank in any gear…….and the noise - oh my days……even on the standard pipe:

Sky Tire Vehicle Aircraft Airplane

Really does sound how I imagine a Messerschmitt would. Intoxicating.

I don't really recall any significant change in engine braking, but then I can't remember what I had for breakfast! Yes, the R1150GS would be for touring and everything thing else, although I feel like I would miss the character of the SCR. Right now, it's just a pipe dream. I've been down this road before, trying to find just 1 bike to do it all. It doesn't exist. The adventure bike is close but you do give up a lot of weather protection. We'll see... Jevers

So maybe what you were actually noticing was the fact that you no longer had that HUGE plate attached to your bike and dragging thru the wind. Of course there would be less engine breaking without that sail full of wind.

So it wasn't the sprocket change that made a noticeable decrease in engine braking. It was your lack of that huge plate dragging thru the wind. 😆

Very funny - but it was actually a (highly illegal here) US size plate - 6x4” (I think?)
