Oil Consumption Question

2157 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  MileHighSCR
....after a 462 mile ride through the Rocky Mountains this weekend oil was down about 1/2qt.
High summer temps / high speeds 80-85+ for sprints on the highway
2200 total mileage on the bike.
No leaks - bike ran great - have to assume it vaporized in the heat / rpm?? Thoughts?
Anyone else seeing that kind of oil consumption?

So I’m right in thinking that’s almost half a litre, right? In that case, that’s about an eighth it’s capacity. Would seem a lot to me, but how do you know you’ve used that much - just via the dipstick? I wouldn’t know how much needs adding, for example, to get the oil from the bottom of the dipstick, to the top, if you know what I mean?

Then, given the rubbish method whereby you have to have the bike perfectly vertical to get an accurate reading, was it vertical both times? Precisely? Also, how warm was the engine when you took both readings, as that also makes a difference?

I dont really like dipsticks, they have too many variables on a bike - give me a sight glass I can read whilst the bike is on the side stand, and I’ll be happy.

Doesn’t really answer your question, I know - sorry. :frown2:

...went back and thought about this more -
I changed the “break in” oil at 800miles and haven’t pulled the dip stick since.

Bike actually has 2476 miles now.

So I rode it 1676 miles and it used 1/2qt or 400ml of oil.

Bike is on a chassis lift perfectly level.
Ran motor until cases were hot to touch.
Turned bike off - let sit for 5 minute.
Pulled dip stick - followed owners manual for oil check protocol.
1. first reading was at the bottom X (see attached picture -RED arrow)
Added 200ml or 1/4qt
Ran motor for 3 minutes / waited 5
2. Second reading was mid dip stick (See attached picture - YELLOW arrow)
Added 200ml or 1/4
Repeat
3. Third reading was full (See picture with GREEN arrow)

I am AOK with 400ml or 1/2qt of consumption in 1676 miles especially with the motor mods and the intensity of the ride this last weekend....

Anyone else seeing similar consumption?

You do the same method as me - put the bike in a lift, to try and ensure it’s consistently as level as possible.

And at least we now know it takes approx 400ml to go from the bottom of the dipstick to the top! :grin2: I’m presuming you were at the green arrow after your 800 mile change then?? I only ask, as after my recent service, the dealer only filled the oil to your red arrow......I topped it up at home.....dealers eh??

Personally, I don’t think I’d be worrying either - sure someone else will chime in though.

Yes - it was at the Green Arrow at the 800 mile initial change.
I gave up on dealers doing oil changes. Stripped bolts / over tightened drain plugs etc etc... do it all myself now.

Today I went to to the local Yammer Hammer shop to simply buy a new O ring for my dipstick.

It took the entire staff at the service Dept to figure out how order one (I gave them the part #) and then was told it will take two weeks for it to get here ...
meanwhile the gent behind the counter was kind enough to to strike up a friendly conversation and tell me all about his prescription pill and alcohol addiction.... umm yeah - let me bring my bike in tomorrow and have you guys wrench on it .... ummm no thanks.

What a great article !! Thank you for sharing!!
Currently change my moto oil at 2500miles intervals and my vehicles at 5k intervals using MobileOne full synthetic
The other thing we experience here is incredible temp swings = 30 to 50f degree changes. Also hard on everything including the human elements of the equation
